Live Chat On This Blog is Available

Posted by R. MAK. 19 November, 2008 (0) Comment

With addition of the new widgets in sidebar, Live Chat is now available at all my blogs. When ever I am online, you can see my status right here on the blog. you can click one the white balloon on right to reach me when I am signed in to Google. While the bigger chat box below the ‘Recent Tabs’ will let you chat live with me on MSN. you don’t need to have Gtalk or MSN. the web versions are already loaded.

I’m not so sure. if Live Chat will actually will work on blogs like mine or not. I just thought it is a clever idea to include these widgets so people can contact me when I am online. It probably is a better mode of communication with my existing readers. On the flip side is that all chats are lost, once they are done. I can definitely save them on my IM (highly unlikely, I know). Now This is a a new problem: IM conversations generally have a poor signal-to-noise ratio, making it virtually impossible for subsequent readers to find the information they’re looking for. Oh, and don’t get me started on the spam problem. The other potential pitfalls are perm linking and search. The benefit of comments is that they can be perm inked - they become mini-blogs of their own The other advantage of a permanent record is that it turns up in search results - I often find the information I’m looking for in blog comments. If there is no perm link structure for live chat and the chats aren’t stored on the originating blog, all these advantages are lost.

Live Chat on Blog

I may be pushing live chat to its edge but I really want to know the people who visit my blogs. It is very personal and I have every right to engage people visiting my street in any manner I deem fit. period. lol

I think I will give it a shot for a week or two and see the results. Two things can happen, Either I will be over whelmed by the visitors constantly nudging me with PMs or People will just simple ignore these widgets and just pass by silently. I am betting on the second one, while Paul is standing next to me and he thinks I have made a mistake of my life.. let’s see whose prediction comes true.

I wanted to add a section on how to implement live chat on your blog but I think It would be more interesting if you ask me through chat to help you with that :) I am waiting folks..

Have a nice day!

Internet Speed: How to Increase with HOSTS file

Posted by R. MAK. 1 October, 2008 (7) Comment

Increasing Internet speed is an uphill battle. Especially when you are on a dial-up connection, It is vital that pages load fast enough to let you do the task efficiently and effectively. Web sites today are loaded with parasites like Unwanted Adverts, banners, Pop-ups and page counters. When you have ample bandwidth and computing power, the extra load these parasites put on your connection is negligible. The situation becomes very annoying when you are on a dialup connection. These unwanted parasites consume a larger percentage of your bandwidth and increase the page load time. These also put a stress on your processor and the computer suddenly becomes very sluggish.

there is no place like home

In order to avoid this we apply various tweaks and tools to the task. We disable popups and Java Scripts. We use firewalls, anti-virus, anti-malware and God knows what else. Less than 50% people know that you can avoid 70% of all that is useless and dangerous on the Internet by just a few entries in your HOSTS file (if you are on Windows based PC).

How to Keep Your Digg Friends Happy!

Posted by R. MAK. 13 August, 2008 (7) Comment

Digg is one of most democratic social bookmarking sites. Making stories popular on digg is quite difficult these days unless you spend all your time on digg and have a good deal of active friends. In my case I have more than 200 friends on digg. It is almost impossible to digg all their shouts. I get around 50 to100 shouts each day. If I don’t digg them daily they pileup and people get angry at me and don’t digg my shouts.

Recently I found a great tool that made my digg life very easy. I just need to spend less than an hour on digg. I digg all my incoming shouts and delete them with ease. My friends are happy and they have started to digg more shouts of mine.  Although I have not reached first page with any of my stories. Still all my submissions get about 10 - 20 diggs on average after I shout them. Which is improving each day as my reputation for digging all incoming shouts is building up as I digg my way into people’s shouts. Read the rest of this entry

I have done some site loading time tests before and after these tweaks.I have seen a 80% increase in performance. I am eager to hear from you about your experience with this.

  1. Type about:config in the address bar and hit Enter.
  2. In the filter search bar type network.http.pipelining. Be sure the value field is set to true, if not double-click to set to true. (HTTP is the application-layer protocol that most web pages are transferred with. In HTTP 1.1, multiple requests can be sent before any responses are received. This is known as pipelining. Pipelining reduces page loading times, but not all servers support it.)
