Top 5 Gadgets of the Week

Posted by R. MAK. 20 August, 2008

Starting from Week 33 of 2008, we will bring you exciting and unique gadgets from around the web. these  will include some of the sexiest and wackiest gadgets.

Camera For Blind People

Next time whey you see a person trying to push a camera like object to his / her forehead, do not think he is gone mad or missed his/her medication. Most probably he is a visually impaired person trying to take a photographs.

The back of this device contains a Braille display sheet that embosses a 3D image of picture being taken so to shoot a picture you have to press this camera on your forehead and press the click button. Apart from being a great gadget for visually impaired people. It is also a really cool toy for people with good vision as some people would like to “feel” their private photo sessions with girlfriends.

Product has not reached market so far but initial tests and prototype looks promising.

Matrix Cube Alarm Clock

Unless you are real nerd and Matrix(Movie) fan, this gadget will not appeal you. Its 3 parts a stringed together with  a ribbon and you can arrange it in any way you like and it will display time correctly and incorrectly… depends upon how you stack it on your desk. It can display time in 12 hour and 24 hours formats. As far as dimensions go, each cube is approx 3.5″ square that reminds me of the floppy disk size that is almost obsolete these days. It is a bargain with a price tag of just  $34.99. you may order it from ThinkGeek.com

USB Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer

For Just $22 per piece, this USB thermometer takes temperature reading each second for upto 12 hours. It saves the data in a log that can later be pasted to Word/Excel very easily. With temerature range of -50° ~ 150° , this will not make a great science lab tool but for rest of us, this is a great tool. I am thinking about using it in our server room and use the data to nail my building administrator for next air conditioning failure.

Currently it supports XP and Vista. Its has a very small footprint and is powered by USB. weight is only 13 grams. The package also includes a USB Extention cable, Indoor and outdoor Thermometer probe and a driver CD for windows XP and Vista.

Portable Mobile Phone Jammer

This little beast is a hand-held portable universal cell phones Jammer. It can be used in conference rooms, classrooms , libraries, courtrooms, cinema halls and concert halls. On a fully charged battery, this device can keep all mobile phones jammed within 8 - 10 meter radius for upto 1.5 hours. the size is so small that it can easily fit the palm of your hand.

I have only once concern though that in hands of car thieves, this can render all kind of tracker devices useless as most of today’s car tracking devices use GSM / GPRS to connect to base stations. But I do like the fact that, If I have this one with me, I can silence all mobile phones around me without having to confront annoying people. although there are some states where use of such devices is prohibited by law.

Here is the list of frequencies it can block

  1. GSM850 Band: 869-894 MHz
  2. EGSM900: 925-960 MHz
  3. DCS1800: 1805-1880 MHz
  4. PCS1900: 1930-1990 MHz
  5. CDMA800: 869-894 MHz
  6. WCDMA/CDMA2000: 2110-2170 MHz
  7. PHS: 1895-1919 MHz
  8. DECT: 1880-1900 MHz

The device is however priced at quite higher side of things. At around $250 it is not worth its money but those who value a good nap during commute might find the price tag reasonable.

Sponge Toothbrush: A Revolution in dental care

An industrial designer, Fabio Dabori, from Brazil created a whole new toothbrush concept aka a Giro Sponge. This battery powered toothbrush has replaced the conventional brush head with a small sponge. He introduces a new term of Toothsponge for his new invention.

This new toothbrush (sponge) seems very useful for people with sensitive teeth i.e kids, senior citizens etc. The designer has patent for his idea and is currently looking for investors and partners for bringing the new product to market…. Good Luck to him

Cool gadgets, but you might want to add a disclaimer: Mobile phone jammers are illegal in many countries, including most of the USA, as unlicensed use of FCC-controlled frequencies as well as the willful interference with the signals being illegal!

Cool gadgets. But I am afraid the GSM phone jammer is one that will give everybody concern.

I think it should be highly regulated. Else, criminals will make terrible use of it. I can’t imagine a criminal having one in his pocket while his victim tries unsucessfully to send an SOS message or call 911

nice post.

Yes, I can understand the concern over the jammer. If someone comes at me with a knife or gun I will immediately ignore any physical threats and go straight for my cell phone so that 911 can record my dying description of my assailant.

Phone Jammer - That’s a steep price to pay for such a short range. As a note, I know that some rich guy from Dubai has bought a house in a large square in London. Since he moved in, anybody trying to make a call anywhere in the square. I’ve no idea why.

Ryan, please remember to grammar check your posts in future - your sentence was poorly structured and had no semantics.

OT - The phone jammer looks pretty handy, shame the range:cost isnt too good.

Anonymous, semantics means the study of meaning. Very few sentences have semantics.

The spongebrush seems like it would hold any bacteria from the mouth quite well and dispense it later on.

I like the phone jammer idea. I have a much lower-tech device that will turn off most TVs. Kind of fun in a Chili’s on occasion. What I really want is a device that either turn off loud car stereos or send a frequency that will simply destroy the sub-woofers.

How many STUPID criminals would spend $250 on a piece of electronics that doesn’t play hip-hop or rap? And how much thought do you really think goes into a random act of violence? We’re not talking Lex Luther here. I’d like one that just jammed those moron texters who have no idea anymore of how to talk to another human-being. (Much less, how to spell or use the English language.)
