Ongoing Broadband Deception – Part-1

Posted by mudassir 24 June, 2009 (1) Comment

There is something unusual going on in the online broadband world. Fear, manipulation, and deceptive showing of realities are in action—all of these things are meant to attract rival’s customers, either by creating doubts in their minds about the honesty of their existing suppliers or by deceiving them by making them to think that they’ve reached a big deal.

One day when I was preparing my lunch, I saw a new Cablevision Optimum Online commercial. I just stopped and started watching and noticed that it was not one of those tricky ones, with the young man singing the phone number. Nor was it among the attractively created ones that picture people walking around with multimedia system taking on all over their bodies. They are said to be grist for making a better life through broadband utilization, but I guess they are the foundation for a horror movie. Anyhow that commercial was different.

Damn Small Linux only 50mb

Posted by Maria 12 June, 2009 (4) Comment

From 3 years I have been using linux and most of the time Ubuntu or Kubuntu 2 months with suse because of its killer GUI. Today I have found an incredible distro of linux which is just 50mb small and it is free, and in addition to this its open source is called Damn Small Linux. By using LINUX we come across a couple of benefits the key ones are that it is secure, most of them are free, because of more vast developing features they attracts geeks. This distro is too small which makes it easy to carry it any where with you on any media possible boots.

Compared to its small size DSL (Damn Small Linux) is really having a lot of cool options more than what it sounds, it has such capability that you can run it directly from usb drive, cd or dvd, you can easily install it on hard disk and after that it will turn into a Debian base OS and the developer, you can also probably run DSL on Intel 486DX with 16 mb Ram,

Love Thy Neighbor but hack his Wi-Fi

Posted by rmak 4 February, 2009 (87) Comment

My neighbor  works for a fortune 500 company. I don’t know what he does exactly but he got a 10mbps internet connection attached to his WiFi router. He is mostly not home till late in the evening. so all this bandwidth sits idle all day. such a waste!

I did try to connect to this router many times but it kept asking for a password. That son of gun must have it encrypted it. So what should I do, It is a sin to have a 10mbps wireless in range and not hack it. Its a sin. Too much for love thy neighbor..Let’s hack his Wi-Fi (For Educational Purpose of course )

wirelesshacking

And, by the way, I am his neighbor too… and he even won’t share his Wi-Fi with me.. what and A*s. He is more than welcome to use my 1Mbps DSL anytime. I have not put a password on it because I believe in sharing. Read the rest of this entry

List of Free Linux/Unix Shell Account Providers

Posted by Henry 22 October, 2008 (7) Comment

A Unix shell or Linux console is a personal account which allows users access to a command prompt on another machine. We mentioned those earlier in our Post about Linux Commands , With these accounts you can login to a remote server and execute commands on it. These accounts are normally accessed via SSH. Historically we used telnet for that but now telnet is fast becoming obsolete due to security concerns. These free shell accounts can be used to practice your Linux / Unix skills as well as making most out of IRC, Email, web hosting etc. Geek Sells Free Shells On Sea Shore

The free Unix shell accounts listed below are all provided by not for profit organizations. The existence of these non-profit organizations is vital for Internet community. So it is not good to bring them down. (you know what I am talking about).

How to Double Firefox Browsing Speed on Dialup Connection

Posted by Maria 5 August, 2008 (9) Comment

Thanks for reading “How to Double the Firefox browsing speed on dialup connections”. As we all know, firefox is taking over the browser’s market with it’s improved features and enhanced security. It is so far the fastest browser out of the box among its major competitors like I.E. and Opera. Still there is lot’s of room for improvement in firefox. Fortunately due to open nature of the browser it is not difficult to tweak your browser to get the optimal browsing speed.

I have compiled here a list of tips and tricks and tweaks that I have done to my browser to get most of my slow slow connection. It should work for you as well. I have done some site loading time tests before and after these tweaks.I have seen a 80% increase in performance. I am eager to hear from you about your experience with this.

  1. Type about:config in the address bar and hit Enter.
  2. In the filter search bar type network.http.pipelining. Be sure the value field is set to true, if not double-click to set to true. (HTTP is the application-layer protocol that most web pages are transferred with. In HTTP 1.1, multiple requests can be sent before any responses are received. This is known as pipelining. Pipelining reduces page loading times, but not all servers support it.)

How to Optimize Your Internet Connection to Get 100 % Bandwidth

Posted by Maria 30 July, 2008 (18) Comment

Most of Internet connections are working below capacity. A simple bandwidth test would reveal that your own Internet connection is working well below its capacity. some times below 60% of the bandwidth is utilized. Below are some of the tricks I have collected that may help you get most juice out of your internet connection.

Increase bandwidth by tweaking QoS in Windows XP Pro

The following tweak applies only to Windows XP Professional edition. The default system behavior is that all 100% bandwidth is available, however, if there is a running application that indicates to the OS it needs to send high priority/real time data, then as long as it has the socket open, Windows XP will restrict “best effort” traffic to 80% of the bandwidth so that high priority traffic can be accommodated. Basically, applications can make this request to the operating system for QoS support using the QoS application programming interfaces (APIs) in Windows and this only applies if a specific app is requesting QoS.

If you’d like to change how much bandwidth is reserved for QoS (the default is 20% of the total bandwidth), do the following:

  • Make sure you’re logged in as “Administrator” (not just any account with admin privileges).
  • Navigate to START>Run and type: gpedit.msc
  • Navigate to Local Computer Policy > Administrative Templates > Network > QOS Packet Scheduler
  • In the right window, double-click the limit reservable bandwidth setting
  • On the setting tab, check the enabled setting.
  • Where it says “Bandwidth limit %”, change it to read 0 (or whatever percentage you want to reserve for high priority QoS data)
  • Click OK, close gpedit.msc
  • Under START > My Computer > My Network Connections > View Network Connections, right-click on your connection and under Properties (where it lists your protocols), make sure QOS Packet Scheduler is enabled.
