Dell while indication that the GPS and location features that have gained popularity on smartphones and navigation devices are now migrating to netbooks, said that it has made plans to start offering a location service-enabled application for its Dell Mini 10 netbook family.
In a blog, it was said by Dell that it will offer its Dell Wireless 700 location solution that will begin from next week. A combination of technology is being used by the system, from Broadcom A-GPS and Skyhook Wireless’ Wi-Fi position applications.
It was said by Dell blogger Lionel Menchaca that they are betting that location services will be a hit in netbooks and that the Mini 10 is the first system that will be offered by them having the optional Dell 700 Wireless location solution.
On tens of millions of Apple iPhones and iPod Touch devices Skyhook Wireless’ Wi-Fi position app is already a standard feature. Location-based applications have been written by thousands of developers around the Skyhook technology and now it will be relatively easy for the same developers to make copies of their applications for the Dell netbooks.
It has been noted by Dell’s Menchaca that the Dell Wireless 700 system also comes with the feature of CoPilot navigation software for turn-by-turn driving directions. 2D and 3D maps and trip planning features are being offered by the CoPilot software that can be updated before and during trips. Skyhook’s solution works with browser plug-in Loki, it helps to provide details on nearby points of interest like restaurants. Also it gives support to Social media sites Loopt and BrightKite, this enables users to follow the movements of their friends.
