Vehicle Recovery Through Vehicle Locator

Vehicle Locator is a means for automatically determining the geographic location of a vehicle and transmitting the information to a requester. The most common to determine the location of the vehicle is through GPS (Global Positioning System), and the transmission mechanism is SMS (Short Message Service), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) a terrestrial radio or a satellite from the vehicle to a radio receiver. The most common services used for this purpose are GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) and EVDO (Evolution-Data Optimized or Evolution-Data only), due to the low data rate needed for automatic vehicle locator (AVL) and the low cost and near-ubiquitous nature of these public networks.

Vehicle locator units are employed in many industries to track and manage vehicles and vessels. It is used to track and identify vehicles for example; airports find the auto locator units very useful as Vehicle Locators, since it is very difficult to keep track of all airport surface activity. Through the use of this technology we can know about the current location information for all kinds of vehicles.

It is required for maintenance trucks, snow plows, and emergency response vehicles etc, as vehicles need to monitored and peak traffic periods and inclement weather conditions make it more difficult. Some vehicle location units use UHF radio frequencies instead of GPS and cellular phone technology.

Vehicle Recovery System

This system is used to tack and recover stolen or lost vehicles. While there is a little variation of technology used by automatic vehicle recovery systems, some use GPS, cellular phone or paging technology and some use UHF radio frequencies. There are some limitations of GPS system i-e it may not work well in underground or indoor hiding places. Though some recovery systems are stand-alone and they don’t require an interface with any other system or infrastructure. These systems start working and monitor the coverage area and begin tracking a stolen vehicle before the owner even notices that the vehicle is missing.

Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL)

It is a navigation system such as GPS used to determine vehicle position. It is an automatically tracking technology, auto location and tracking and locating mobile assets such as trailers, containers, and other equipment. Every mobile automatic vehicle location unit has a GPS receiver that reports its position to the base station over a communications network. This GPS receiver allows the base station to monitor the entire fleet and manage the mobile assets.
