Create free ringtones for your iPhone using only iTunes and songs you already have on your computer.Keep in mind that iTunes will allow you to create a ringtone from a song downloaded through the iTunes Music Store, but those ringtones come with fees… and no one likes fees. Follow this guide to create free iPhone ringtones for free using nothing more than iTunes.iphone

To create simple, free iPhone ringtones from your iTunes library, follow these steps:

Open iTunes and Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer
Listen and find the part of the song that you want to use.
Right-click the song and select “Get Info.”
Go to the “Options” tab and go down to the “Start Time” and “Stop Time” check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 40 seconds or less.
Click “OK” when you’re done.

Right click on your newly “clipped” song and select “Convert Selection to AAC”. The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined.
Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.
If your menu item does not read “Convert Selection to AAC” and reads “Convert Selection to MP3″ (or some other format) please go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing and change the “Import Using” drop down menu to “AAC Encoder”.
Navigate to your iTunes Music folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop.
After the song is on your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from you iTunes library (It won’t delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it from iTunes).
Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose “Properties”.
Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop).
After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section.

Connect your iPhone and Sync your iPhone to get jiggy with your new iPhone ringtones!

Tips & Warnings

· If you are having trouble syncing the ringtones to your iPhone, find the ringtone in your Ringtones folder and change the extension back to .M4A, then attempt to sync again.

· Instead of deleting it, you can also drag the newly converted ringtone to your desktop from iTunes and follow the rest of the steps.

· There may be some problems with the latest version of Leopard; renaming the file may not work properly, and you won’t be able to add it to the Ringtones folder.

· This will not work with songs bought at the iTunes store or that have DRM (copy protection). Your best bet is to use a song that you have imported from a CD.

Enjoy your free iPhone ringtone library!
