The Finnish company displayed a new, improved Symbian running on a number of devices at the company’s Capital Market Day event for investors this week.

Nokia will be launching the revamped OS next year. The new OS is much leaner and a lot faster than the current version. According to Nokia, the new version will be up to three times faster.

It will also combat one of the biggest criticisms Symbian faces at present, i.e. it will also be multitouch-compatible on capacitive screens.

Nokia product supreme, Kai Öistämö, said at the event that the new-look Symbian would prove to be advantageous for Nokia. He further added that the completely new visual architecture re-working of the UI will drastically reduce the complexity throughout and bring fresh appeal.

According to Öistämö, Nokia has also paid special attention to the number of screen taps required to perform key actions, making it two taps to get to music and video instead of eight, and email access in two steps instead of four. The interface will also be almost three times faster.

However, the company also plans to cut down the number of new smartphones it will release next year by about half. Thus although we might not be seeing much of the new phones, but the ones we will get to see would be pretty special.
