Web 2.0 Is Not Doomed-It Doesn’t Exist

I am not a big critic that I boast upon myself. But its not like that I becomes silent after hearing or reading such things to which I can’t agree. As I think most of people when they hear, watch or read such thing about which they knows it cant be like that so that thing is criticized then. Same is case with me as I heard this quote from Elevation Partners cofounder Roger McNamee, who was speaking on CNBC that Web 2.0 that seemed to hold a lot of promise did not develop. The vast majority of Web 2.0 businesses are going to cease to be viable businesses. That statement on CNBC led other to say that Web 2.0 is doomed.

Well Web 2.0 is the second generation of Web sites and services that emerged after the boom of dot-come. Most of these Web sites are combination of social interaction. And obviously these sites had done more than their ancestor Web sites of 1990s and early 2000s.

After few years now people started talking about Web 3.0 now this makes me totally disagree with it because talking about Web 3.0 means it had been assumed that Web 2.0 is a real thing while its not that’s only a label of essentially different companies. Some people think that Web 2.0 means social networking, well its not even if one is convinced that it is social networking then what is Web 3.0? Making bundles of money by social networking?
As McNamee was talking less about feasibility of so called Web 2.0 business firms and about the facts that Web Start-ups are struggling for profitability and new infusions of cash. As Venture capital firms which are Web start-ups enterprises are laying people off and making fewer and fewer bets. Web 2.0 businesses, which managed to run for years now in reality are in clear risk, the Sites are shutting down and more will be going to shut down.
Let’s be clear: Web 2.0 is not doomed. Web 2.0 does not exist
When it is said, “Web 2.0 is doomed” it is only said by those who do not understand the internet at all, because the term “Web 2.0” was 1st used by Darcy DiNucci in her article “ Fragmented Future” in 1999. After that this term is used so much without realizing what does it really means. They talks about Web 2.0 as it’s a strange bird which suddenly appeared in streets of New York for seconds and then disappeared, though it looks exciting because such incident in New York streets will be in years and surely people will notice that, but in fact this exciting moment passes.

But Internet is not a peacock it’s an essential part of our lives. Millions of dollars had been allotted for broadband expansion. Internet had become part of every ones life we chat, shop, cry, laugh, watch movies, photos, receives calls, plans, work, makes deals, govern and so much more that all happens online. And still if some one claims that Web 2.0 is doomed then that’s ridiculous. Well there are such people still who are not satisfied with online world and tries to make such rubbish claims with ridiculous thought in their mind that the Web will simply be erased from their lives and their lives will become simpler once again.
We have to stop these meaningless ideas
If we look back on the technology revolution in past decades and centuries. We had gone through different ages such as Iron, Industrial and information, which had played a major role in progress of societies. But when we look on major innovations, we can’t find any numbers attached to them. For example in late 1930s the television arrived and after few decades it was called still television even when it came along color later on it was called only color television its never been called television 2.0.
These version numbers actually started in Technology Revolution especially in Software because in software it’s all about version numbers. Each version in software is different from another to differentiate that numerical identifications are needed. Recently people started calling the combination of television and the Internet TV 2.0 that is incorrect. That is only TV or interactive TV.
Conclusion
One should have to realize that Web or Internet is not a piece of any software. As TV is called TV same Web should be also called only Web not Web 2.0, Web 2.5 or Web 3.0. The Web 2.0 is an old label it should have to be retired now and it should be called the Web or the Internet only.
