Windows 7: Nothing More Than Vista Face-lift

Posted by 31 January, 2009 (11) Comment

I am disgusted each day I use windows 7. It is nothing more than a vista re-loaded. It is in fact worse. I long for my dear windows xp. All I have to do is word processing and browsing internet and viewing occasional Excel sheet and PDF documents that come via email. I think I can be more productive on XP.

I think, time is not really on Microsoft’s side. They are releasing one failed product after another. They are like Motorola these days. Motorola never came up with anything better after its RAZR mobile phone design. The bets version of Windows 7 Sucks and sucks badly. have a look yourself. Is this all worth an expensive hardware upgrade?

R. MAK. says goodbye to ixibo! A Technology Blog

Posted by 30 January, 2009 Comments Off

Last night I, finally handed over the passwords for ixibo along with its hosting account to Maria. She will be the new owner and administrator for www.ixibo.com. It has been a great ride from founding this blog to Google Page Rank 3. Since May, 2008, I along with Henry, Paul, Sara and others worked very hard to make this blog a success. we achieved part of it together.

But I have some other big projects in pipeline so, I thought it would be a good idea to handover the keys of this blog to someone who is really passionate about technology and a great team player. I will keep contributing as a guest writer occasionally but now it’s Maria’s show.

Finally, I would like to say good luck and thank you to all my readers. Your feedback and comments have been the single largest source of inspiration that led me to success as a professional blogger. I will keep on doing what I do best… blogging and tweeting on twitter.

rmak on twitter

here are some of the projects I am currently involved in. hope you will like to take a look at what will be working on doing.

You see, I am doing all this so in order to focus better I have to shed some weight. but I will remain a guest writer and extend my help whenever needed.

Have a nice day and subscribe to RSS Feed which is now showing 0 for strange reason :p

Run Away & Hide! When A Hosting Company Offer You Unlimited Bandwidth And Disk Space.

Posted by 24 January, 2009 (4) Comment

These days “Unlimited packages” being offered by many web hosting companies and web hosting reseller. Be it dedicated server or virtual private server, people are just looking for cheap webhosting.  demand for unmetered bandwidth and unlimited ftp space have become increasingly common. Companies are claiming to provide unlimited disk space and bandwidth. This is just an advertising gimmick.

Bandwidth is the quantity of data that is transferred, from and to your server. Let me do some math. Let’s assume, you have an HTML file that is 60 kilobyte in size. If anybody accesses that file. he will use 60kb of bandwidth in that particular data transfer.unlimited hosting

Let’s assume your website gets 100 hits a day. This means 6000kb of bandwidth utilization per day. If we expand it to monthly basis. the total bandwidth required would be 180MB

6000kb * 31 days = 186000kb (roughly 180 MB)

Using the method I mentioned above, anyone can determine their bandwidth requirement. Also you can decide if you need a dedicated server or a virtual private server called vps.  (by the way in webhosting linux is better than windows vps)

unlimited hosting is trap

Size of your website and it’s popularity are the basic and most important factors that you should keep in mind when choosing a web hosting package. A little website with just a few static HTML pages containing some images can easily fit into a small hosting package that offer 200MB space and 1GB monthly bandwidth. On the other hand, if you have a website that is huge and contains audio and video files and it is visited by thousands of people every day – you must consider a package that is large enough to keep all you files and should allow at least 300GB of monthly bandwidth aka data transfers.

Hey Microsoft! Do We Really Need Windows 7?

Posted by 22 January, 2009 (15) Comment

Yesterday at dinner table, few of my tech friends and I were discussing release of Windows 7 by Microsoft. the little chit chat soon turned into a heated debate. Operating systems choice is a very subjective matter. There is no one-size-fits all OS. Each person choose his OS according to his personal taste and requirement. Most people currently use more than one Operating systems. Windows is such necessary evil that everyone has to use it at. There is no escape from Microsoft Windows. Although the list of free operating systems is growing, we still needs windows for majority of tasks(this statement was most controversial last night).

windows-xp-hanged-till-death

I still use Windows XP 2002 Professional, I have installed all critical updates and service packs. It came with my laptop and I am pretty happy with the way it works. I am not upgrading soon. not in next 2 – 3 years. Economy is slow, we need to keep the costs down. It is not a good time to invest in new hardware no matter what anyone says.

MS Office 2009 on Windows 7 Failed to Impress

Posted by 16 January, 2009 (1) Comment

Few hours ago a Wzor, A Russian site leaked few screenshots of the Office 14 alpha build that went into beta testing this week. It appears that some of the testers leaked these images.

This build of Office system 2009 which is pictured below seems to be installed on Windows 7 and it doesn’t  look  like that Microsoft bothered to improvise on it’s UI. Almost nothing has been overhauled yet and the visuals are very similar to Office 2007’s UI.

According to Alpha testers Microsoft is targeting a 2009 release and Office 14 could still be named Office System 2009. What you can see below are some of the screenshots of office 14 aka office system 2009. (please click to expand images)
