Windows XP Secrets: Discover 3 Hidden Desktops

Anyone, who likes to multitask, will tell you that Virtual Desktops are a great way to increase productivity. Ability to make most out of monitor real state and ability to switch between desktops with touch of a button is priceless. This is one of the reasons why geek’s love Linux. In almost all distributions of Linux, these days, you get at least 4 desktops. Each of them have their own background and taskbar. Now you can unlock this feature in Windows..
Microsoft, finally, heard the pleas of windows lovers and released a 554 Kb utility that lets you unlock up to 4 extra desktops. Its called DeskMan.exe and you can download easily from Microsoft Downloads Website.
The Utility comes with a nice toolbar that integrates seamlessly into your taskbar and looks like this on my Windows XP.
You can also setup shortcuts for switching between desktops. I really like that feature. Right clicking on any of the buttons brings up some options to set different backgrounds for each desktop, or to assign shortcut keys for easy access.
Congratulations.. you have just uncovered 3 extra hidden desktops in Windows XP. Now you can tout that before your friends who favor Linux…. one less thing to fancy about Linux

Actually Paras… it originally came from… *bum bum bum* Linux through the Compiz/Beryl/Compiz Fusion app. Not Microsoft.
Great to see that they’re implementing good ideas presented by the Open Source community, but it’s a shame they’re NOT embracing the idea behind said community.
The virtual desktops have been around longer than Beryl… much longer
David is right, they’ve been around much longer than computers actually! Just look in classrooms today; the ingenuity is astounding!
Back on topic, true, however M$ flubbed that this isn’t good enough.
yea but this program sucks with the way it handles open programs in your task bar.
multiple desktops predates linux. Sun, SGI, and NeXT were all using window managers with multiple desktops before linux was an OS.

Im currently using Deskman and it has some quirky behavior.
For example, when a xls(2003) is up and I switch desktops, it collapses all of the menus and toolbars.
Some items aren’t isolated to a desktop (webex float bar).
Also it appears that deskman.exe isn’t being/hasn’t been updated in a while.
Could the country be so lucky? ,
