Top 5 Free Linux Games – Download Now

Speed up your PC

Why should you pay hundred of dollars for expensive PC games when you can have all the fun with these free Linux games? These free Linux games are open source and you can easily and legally download from the sites mentioned below. Some of these games also have their windows ports available too so you can play them on your Windows PC as well.

RACER:The Real Deal

Racer is a free car simulation game, It is using real car physics to get a realistic feeling. Cars, tracks, scenes and such can be created with relative simplicity in mind (compared to other driving simulations). The 3D and other file formats are, or should be, documented. Editors and support programs are also available to get a very flexible and expandable simulator. It uses OpenGL for rendering.

It attempts to do well at the physics section, trying to create life-like cars to emphasize car control and doesn’t cut back on realism in the interest of fun. If you’ve played Grand Prix Legends from Papyrus, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

1998 called, it wants its games back. Sheesh. Even the iPhone can do better than these titles

Love it. I downloaded the racer for my Mac and I’m playing it now. Nothing beats a free game, even if they are low quality graphics and effects.

OpenTTD is open source and free, but (AFAIK) it requires the original files from Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which is (to the best of my knowledge) neither Open Source nor free.

How can you leave out Enemy Territory?

This list does feel a little dated.

Americas Army no longer supports linux, and it’s been that way for quite some time.

As stated OpenTTD requires non-free files.

I don’t play many games, but one that should be considered is:

Battle for Wesnoth – http://wesnoth.org/ – The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme. Build up a great army of humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, trolls or any of the other races and beat those who dare to oppose you.

Even if certain whiny people exaggerate what the iPhone can do in response to you posting something nice, this is still a good introduction to gaming for those who may not have looked into it on the Linux platform. I likey.

America’s Army? Show me the current Linux client please. Oh wait, that doesn’t exist.

There are so many other great games to include, instead, a game that has not been developed for Linux in years, no longer supported and most recent client version is too old to even play on the official servers was listed.

Alien Arena for the win. This is a pretty crappy list. There are much better games for Linux. (Warsow, Nexuiz, LinCity-NG, Neverball)

@Doug, William, AstralSin

I think this is time for making a new list..

Purpose of these lists is to increase awareness about Linux Gaming Scene…

No-one is claiming he knows everything…

I am eager to work with you to make a new list… are you game for that?

SIMUTRANS is much better than “OpenTTD” and finally reached 1.0!

You forgot “Return to Castle Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory”. How dare you!

And freeCiv is a nice Civilization clone :>

I can’t believe no one’s mentioned Frets on Fire. In terms of mass appeal and replay value, it blows away 99% of the other games on Linux. Not to say the aforementioned aren’t worthy titles – you especially got my attention with the screenies of RACER and Flightgear. Thanks!

Frets on fire is a great game indeed.

Racer is also my favorite

Sorry, but not very impressive. Though they are free. But this is why I’ll keep Vista and my DirectX 10 games on my dual boot Vista.

October 9, 2008

Well you ought to be impressed \, snobby Tommy and here’s why.

Either 1) you are into games and would get MORE bay ALSO dual booting Kubuntu.

OR 2) you don’t have time to play every game in existence and the Linux games are already too many for you.

What’s more, setting up the higher end graphics drivers are no more time consuming than Windows AND once the GPU is setup, install and removal of open software games is FASTER and easier. No tiers. No fix patches. No no-CD patches. No XP or Vista work arounds. No DRM. No crap.

This is just sad. Really. The sterile environments in Racer are no match for modern racing games on Windows/XBox360/PS3 (I’m not even going to talk about the manual tweaking of shaders that is necessary / advised to “get that GT3 feeling” as they put it themselves). America’s Army is NOT available for Linux (at least, the latest release isn’t). Cube 2: Sauerbraten is basically a 3D-engine demonstration. A fairly nice 3D engine indeed, but nothing more (of course, it can’t hold a candle to modern engines such as CryTek2). OpenTTD / SimuTrans? No, really, are you serious? Indeed, 1998 wants its games back. TT(D) was great back in the days, but some people have moved on. So should you (otherwise, just download MAME and have a go at Pac-Man). Which only leaves Flight Gear. I’m not into flight sims (along with 99% of all gamers), but who knows, it might stand up against MS Flight Simulator. Then again (considering the other games), I highly doubt it. And don’t give me the: “But they are free!” ‘argument’; let’s just say that it shows. If you want quality, you’ll have to pay. Or use BitTorrent/Usenet (possibly in conjunction with WINE (how ironic) if you really want to) and be done with it. But don’t worry, guys, 20?? will DEFINITELY be the year of Linux on the desktop and as a game platform, no doubt about it. Right…
